Thymic hypoplasia is also known as DiGeorge syndrome, which is a genetic disorder with conditions depending on the syndromes for each individual. However, common symptoms of thymic hypoplasia include effects on facial forms, underdeveloped parathyroid and thymus glands and certain heart deficiencies.

Dr. Angelo DiGeorge, an endocrinologist discovered that there is a particular set medical features of DiGeorge syndrome, which includes under active parathyroid gland or hypoparathyroidism that can result to low levels of calcium blood or hypocalcemia. Under developed thymus or hypoplastic or even absent thymus can result to different troubles in the immune system. Conotruncal heart defects such as interrupted aortic arch, vascular rings, ventricular septal defects and tetralogy may be experienced with thymic hypoplasia. Cleft palate or cleft lip is also an effect of DiGeorge syndrome.

A genetic condition known as velo-cardio-facial syndrome or VCFS is connected to DiGeorge syndrome that involves the same abnormality of the chromosomes of DiGreorge syndrome.

Similar features of thymic hypoplasia was recognized in the year 1970s such as cleft palate or clef lip, hypocalcemia and heart defects are also present to velo-cardio-facial syndrome.

Ninety percent of people who have features of the syndrome lack small part of chromosome 22 at q11 region. However, about ten percent of the patients suffering from DiGeorge syndrome are affected because of heredity, which can pass the deletion to the children. The gene is known to be autosomal dominant, which means that an individual who has the syndrome has fifty percent chance to pass it to his or her child. With this in mind, when a deletion is detected, both parents must under go blood tests to search for the deletion.

Thymic hypoplasia has common features that appear at an early age. However, these features may not be present to every child and the severity differs from one individual to another. These common features may also include difficulties during feeding, abnormal ear exams or loss of hearing, having small head or microcephaly, forty percent of children may suffer mental retardation, which ranges from borderline to mild and IQ level can range from seventy to ninety. For adults, psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia can be recognized.

Children who have DiGeorge syndrome can have features such as hoped eyelids, small ears that have square upper ear, asymmetric face, cleft lip or cleft palate, small chin, side areas of nose tip and small mouth.

Patients who have thymic hypoplasia are more prone to viral and fungal infections in the mouth area. Thrush or oral candidiasis is one of the most familiar fungal infections of the syndrome. On the other hand, herpes is a common viral infection that can appear through cold sores.

It is necessary to see a doctor or dentist if you have DiGeorge syndrome or thymic hypoplasia. A dentist can give you special medication to treat or lessen the infections cause by the syndrome, which includes antifungal therapy. Cold sores and other infections can be treated by administering antiviral medications. Usually, antibiotics are recommended to be taken during the medication and after the treatment. However, antibiotic administration depends on your health status. It is best to tell your dentist about the medicines that you are taking especially each dosage of the medication. Make sure to notify your dentist about your allergic reactions to different medications.
